I had a day off. This morning, I went to AEON as usual. There, I've read George Orwell's "1984" completely, enjoying Radiohead's several very "critical" songs. By this reading, I've grabbed an idea that this novel contains various figures of concept "hate", and finally reaches to its ending part where the main character Winston has found a very horrible, desperate state of mind, "love". I can't tell about this in detail, but anyway, this conclusion of this novel makes me think a lot.
I can't analyze/criticize this novel by any political points of view which probably could enable me to suggest how this one can contain precious messages/lessons within it. All I can do is just to read this with my "super" personal feelings (probably, it can also be called my "instinct"), even though it can become "wrong" from any "correct", "diligent" reading styles. However, from an autistic stranger who once had been treated as an alien, the noticing about love and hate as I've written above suggests very important things to me personally.
"Hate" can divide us so simply and brutally into "mates" and "enemies", and "love" can work as a great factor which unifies/connects us into one. That's my understanding/recognizing. At least in my reading, I've felt that at the beginning this novel has a very monotonal/plain scenery, and after Winston finds love it starts having a colorful mood. But then, why do I have to feel a very horrible emotion at the ending part where Winston finds an ultimate "love"? Probably, it can be a sort of "love" by a violent control caused by brainwashing I guess.
It must sound very ridiculous to YOU... However, this time reading has cast a piece of memories into my mind that tells me that I had seen the same monotonal scenery as "1984" as a teenager. At that time, I was also trying to understand why I had to love the "trendy" items in public as other students did, even though I didn't have a diary like this... Of course, this idea must be very unreal and also exclusive. However, even though I accept Japan has a democratic system, I can't stop thinking that even under that system so-called "totalism" can start working as a very brilliant/charming role that can unify us... as the ideal of "love".
